Chargen Steps

FIRST THINGS FIRST

Before we begin getting into the gritty, number crunching parts of Character generation, we should begin with a few details. First of all, you need to set your characters sex, age, apparent age, and description.

Set your characters sex by typing '@SEX me=<sex>', where sex is their gender.. either male or female. To set your characters IC age, type '+AGE <age>', where <age> is your characters 'real' age. Next, set your apparent age by typing, '+APP_AGE <apparent age>', where <apparent age>, is how old your character looks, how old they might be mistaken for on first sighting. Finally, you need to set a small description. It doesn't have to be completely detailed right now, just something small to start you off. However, before you can be approved, you must have your complete description done. To set your temporary description, type '@desc me=<description>', where <description> is what your character looks like (NOTE: Want pointers? Try '+desc' for some notes. Need a random ethnic-group suggestion? Try '+race' to sort through RL Chicago Demographics. Need a random job-suggestion? Try '+job'). To see these instructions again, type 'look'.

STATS

Here, we will set your stats, a numbered representation of your character's physical, and mental abilities. Beginning characters start with 120 points to dedicate to their stats. The average level that your typical, run of the mill, John Q. Public would have is 10. Player characters are assumed to be a bit above average, and thus gain an edge in points. Make sure to read through 'news statistics', for a description of what each stat means. Remember, stats range from 1 through 50 (with 30 being human max), and to raise something from 15 to 16 will cost more than from 5 to 6.

To set a stat, type '+SET/STAT <stat>=<level>' (To cut to John Q. Public's stats, '+SET/STAT STANDARD'. From there, you can spruce it up). To reset a single stat, set its value to zero. Keep in mind that stats become more expensive, the higher they go. To see how much a stat level costs, type '+STATCOST <num>'. To view your stats, type '+SHOW/STATS', and to view your entire character sheet, type '+SHEET'. If you make a mistake, type '+RESTART', and to restart Character Generation from the beginning, type '+RESTART/ALL'. To see these instructions again, type 'look'.

* You have 0 points for Stats *

SKILLS

Now it's time to set your characters skills. Like stats, skills are a numbered representation of your character's knowledge and learning. The 'average' level for a skill used on a common casual basis is ten (A cabbie might have Driving:10, a home-maker might have Cooking:10, a telemarketer might have Intimidation:10 or Deception:10, etc..). The cost of a skill increases as you buy it at higher numbers. To see how much a level of a skill would cost, type '+skillcost <num>'. Skills range from 0 through 50. If you have any questions about skills, take a look at '+HELP SKILLS' for a list of skill-level descriptions and '+explain <skill>' for details.

To view a complete list of skills, type '+SKILLS'. To set a skill, type '+set/skill <name>=<value>'. If you make a mistake, or wish to clear a skill, set its value to zero. And, if you wish to reset the entire skills portion of chargen, type '+restart'. If you wish to reset all of chargen, and start from the beginning, type '+restart/all'. To view your current skills, and skill points remaining, type '+show/skills'. To view these instructions again, type 'look'.

If you're gearing for some sort of soldier or police officer, see '+trooper/help'.

* You have 0 points for Skills *

BACKGROUND

Now it's time to tell us something about your character's past such as past experiences and important moments in their life prior to beginning here. Basically, we want to know what motivated your character to do what they do now, where they came from, why they're in Chicago, etc… The staff isn't looking for a full length novel, but if you wish to write one, that's fine with us. Really, we'd like to see a couple of paragraphs of your characters history. And please remember.. Drama is dependent upon the weakness of the characters, but no-one wants to play on AngstMU*. Oodles of helpful pointers are listed in 'news backgrounds'

Now don't let this portion of character generation scare you away. Upon completing the CharGen possess, a staff member will be looking your background over. If there are discrepancies, or parts that they feel you need to expand on, they'll work with you to get it in order. Please take a look at '+help background' for the commands needed to set your history. And if you have any questions, check the +staff list to find an active admin, and ask your question on channel or via page.

Also feel free to bounce ahead to the next stages, then hit the Background later on if you'd prefer.

INFO & FINGER SETUP

Now it's time to set up your +finger and +info information. +finger is used to store information for other players. Unless stated, nothing in your +finger profile will be of any value to the characters of those players, and using it as such won't be allowed. Never the less, it's quite nice to say what in the +finger is ICly known and what is ICly unknown. For a complete help on +finger, take a look at '+HELP FINGER', and for a complete list of attributes that +finger will accept, see '+HELP FINGER-SETUP'.

Where +finger is used to store OOC information that you'd like other players to see, +info is used to store IC public knowledge. Important bits of your background.. relevant IC information that you'd like to post, so players don't have to ask you about it constantly. Be warned though, that anything posted via +info -IS- IC, unless stated otherwise, and /can/ be used in RP. For a full help on +info, see '+HELP INFO'. And, for help on setting up your +info attributes, see '+HELP INFO-SETUP'. Please note, 'Vampire' 'HAV' and 'Pard' are just examples. Feel free to use whichever ones apply from +INFO/LIST and skip the ones that don't.

You might also want to take a look at '+HELP LANGUAGE2' now, and '+HELP LANGUAGE' later. '+HELP SCENT' might also be fun.

FINAL STEPS

Now it's time to make sure all of our information is in place before letting the approval staff know that your ready to have your character looked over. Take a look at your +sheet, and make sure that you're happy with your stats/skills, because once you leave this room you won't be able to change them without spending experience points. If you're not sure if you have points left, type '+SHOW/STATS', and '+SHOW/SKILLS', to see your total points remaining. If you'd like to discard the points for XP, try '+STAT/CLEAR' and/or '+SKILL/CLEAR' (otherwise, 'BACK' and use +skill/set and/or +stat/set). Take a moment to read over your background and be sure that it's all in order. You might also want to finish up your description if you didn't do so before (NOTE: Again, '+desc' for some notes and pointers. And check '+help desc' for MultiDescer code so you can store different outfits). Finally, check over your +info and +finger, and double check to see if you have set everything you wanted to. Once happy, type 'VERIFY', to make sure you haven't missed any steps, then type 'FINISHED', to leave.

If you'd like to have someone staffish take a look at your background and all before you leave this code-full room, try '+chargen <text>' to request perusal. Leaving this room will also notify staff. If you're making a preternatural, the funky stuff will come later after you've left.

GAME> Type 'BACK' to return back to the previous step
GAME> Type 'FINISHED' to complete character generation.
