Chicago Chronicle article: Feb 26th 2002
The Church of Eternal Life was the victim of a co-ordinated racist assault. At least five Brightlighers were locked in the church by unknown assailants. The leader of the Church, Presbyter Samuel DeLisco was chained and given an explosive necklace with a remote detonator, by witness accounts. The exits were all sealed and a fire was started.
Authorities responded quickly but were unable to subdue the blaze or save any of the victims. Two fire fighters suffered smoke inhalation and one RPIT officer was wounded by shrapnel when the explosives went off.
One police psychic managed to slow the last suspect at the scene, but in a heated shootout the man was killed.
Six prayer candles are lit in the Church every February 26th in memorial remembrance of the fire, one for each church member killed and one for the slain suspect, all given equal respect.
Also keeping the disaster in mind, the church is well-equipped in fire extinguishers, fire alarms, overhead sprinklers (secured water-source to prevent 'accidental' blessing), and a security system.
After the passing of Pbr.DeLisco, Pbr.Xanthus began to head the Chicago parish.
