Fae Types
Below are random fae types that are pulled from the Merry Gentry series of books. We have provided this as a general guide to how varied the fae truely are. By clicking on a name listed after each type you can see a brief desc and mocked up stat sheet for that character in Laurell's world of fae. The desc's are Laurell K Hamilton's, the stats are staffs interpretations of how these types would be translated onto the grid. The stats are NOT as they would emerge from preter chargen…but how they would appear icly on the grid. For all fae of greater than 500 yrs in age, they are marked as 2000 yrs old, this is to reflect them from the books.
Bits of Fae Trivia:
In fairie, at any court you are not allowed to marry until you are with child. (Lof 21).
The faerie had done two weirding spells in Europe, trying to conrol ourselves enough to live peaceably with the humans, but we had done one more here. (MK 110)
Four leaf clover is the most powerful plant protection from faerie. (MK168)
Legend says that a fae exiled from faerie will wither and fade, die. That's both true and untrue…Some of the lesser fae would literally wither and die in a man-made city. But most fae can manage in a city; they may not be happy, but they can survive. But part of them does wither, that part of them that knows that not all the butterflies you see are actually butterflies.(CoT 2)
The various Fae Courts:
Dimunitive Fae (aka Demi fae/Will o Wisp):
(Merry is speaking to Niceven the Dimunitive Fae queen) "My father made sure I knew the history of all the fey. The demi-fae are the most cloely allied with the rawness that is faerie, the very stuff that makes us different from the humans. You are not leprechaun, or pixie, to pine and die away from faerie. You /are/ faerie. Is it not said that when the last demi-fey fades, there will be no more faerie upon the earth?"' (CoT 127)
These creatures are small but are not limited to size. Some can grow larger, some are the size of a gnat, but they all are fae and noted for their quickness of wit and action.
Goblins:
Goblin society represented the ultimate in Darwinian evolution: only the strongest survive, and only the very strongest survive. (MK193) Red Caps once were a kingdom among themselves. (MK186) He actually put two of his arms on the ground and abased himself-striking ecause in goblin society the lower you go, the more respect you feel for the person you are addressing. (MK196) The Goblins are the foot soldiers of the Unseelie. To drink of someones blood among the goblins is considered theft, the only greater theft is a theft of flesh. (kos348) It is an insult not to leer at a woman, as a goblin, and public sex is common place for them. (kos 355) Negotiating a contract of what was and was not acceptable is an important part of Goblin sex. "The goblins loved flesh better than blood or sex To share flesh meant both sex and the greater gift of an allowed bite that would leave a scar until your lover died." (Kos 365)
Goblins are a separate court. Beauty to them are mutiple limbs, eyes, heads, breasts. They are ruled by a king, who holds his throne by force of strengths, they have their own culture separate from the sidhe. Examples of Goblins: The Goblin Queen and Jonty
Sluagh/The Host more coming soon The king of the Sluagh is 1/2 sidhe so could play on grid, an example.Sholto
The Host is not one type of creature but rather a gathering of multiple types. It is ruled by Sholto, Lord of That Which Passes Between, Lord of Shadows, King of the Sluagh.
The Sidhe: Seelie and Unseelie:
Differences between the Courts: One thing the Unseelie teaches is love of every from of fey. There is beauty in all of us. Ugly is simply not a word you use at the Unseelie Court. At the Seelie Court I was considered ugly, not tall enough, not slender enough, and my hair was the blood auburn of the Unseelie Court, not the more human red of the Seelie Court. (KoS 109.)
The Fae courts have never gone outside to humans for justice. Faerie rule; faerie law. Or truthfully, sidhe rule; sidhe law. The sidhe had ruled faerie for longer than anyone could remember. Since some of those memories stretched back thousands of years, maybe the sidhe and always been in charge, but it tasted like a lie. The sidhe do not lie, for to truly lie is to be cast out of faerie, exiled. (LOF 1)
Adultery is a crime among the sidhe. (KoS 359)
They torture people at both courts,<snip>. Queen Andais just doesn't hide what she does because she is not ashamed of it. <snip> Am I stating for the record that King Taranis' golden court tortures as punishment? I am so stating. (Lof 24)
Seelie Court:
Description of parts of the Seelie court: Rooms of marble and gold. Rooms with cold pink walls with veins of silver and pillars of gold. Rooms of white marble with veins of pink and lavender and pillars of silver….There was nothing organic in this place of marble and metal. It was a palace, but it was not a home for beings who had begun life as nature spirits. (Lof 254)
Though Taranis is the King of Light and Illusion, it is a saying in the Seelie court, "Whatever the king says is truth." (Lof 241)
The greatest punishment of all is to be castout of the Seelie Court, the golden court. But it is punishment because Taranis and his nobles have convinced themselves that once you join the Unseelie Court you become a monster. Not just in actions, but in body. They tell their people they will become deformed if they join with the Unseelie. (lof 16) The Seelie court try and ape human behavior. They're stuck somewhere between the centuries of fifteen hundred to eighteen hundred, but the try to play human more than the Unseelie. Many of those exiled to our court (Unseelie) have been exiled because of simply wanting to remain true to their original natures, and not let themselves be civilized in a human manner. (LoF 29)
Unseelie Court:
Description of parts of the Unseelie Court:
The white light that filled the hallway was sourceless, coming from everywhere and nowhere…once upon a time there were entire worlds underground. Meadows and orchards and a sun and moon of our very own. I've seen the dying orchards and flower gardens with a fwe straggling blossoms but no underground moon or sun….and the blueprint of the interior seems to change at random, sometimes with you walking through it, like walking through a funhouse made of stone instead of mirrors. (KoS 283)
coming soon Examples of some 1/2 or less sidhe that are accepted into these courts. Doyle
Random Fae types:
Brownie/Bogart :some words on Brownies, these creatures are shorter than most humans. Four to five feet in height, with brown hair covering all of their bodies, and no nose. They frequently have great abilities with telekenesis and have an inborn immunity to iron. Gran
From the books :: She "stood in her kitchen, surrounded by a storm of pots, pans, ladles, spoons, forks, and knives, like an evil metal snow globe with her small brown body as the center piece. the ladles joined he atacks of he pots and pans. Onilwyn was now flat on to the floor, arms over his head for protection. Three fairie terriers were darting in and out to nip at him. - cut - "She's gone bogart!" Galen said over the crashing of metal.
I looked harder at her face. All brownies have skull-like faces because they have no nose, just nostrils. But if their faces look like evil grinning skulls, then they have gone evil- bogart. Brownies can thresh a field of wheat in a single day, or build a barn overnight. Think of that much power turned destructive, insainly destructive. - cut - Maggie may was not quite a bogart, but she was working up to it.'
