Leah Soto was born in New Mexico. Her parents were immigrants whose luck with a mixture of hard work and luck at the stock exchange had changed their lives forever, making the family finances a little less fraught. With a big extended family in Las Cruces, she grew up with an initial confidence in her ability to be loved. However, hitting puberty changed a few things. Her family found that Leah and fires were often linked, and small fires in her bedroom soon became an ongoing problem. Add to that, she began to see things, hear things, and made the mistake of the telling her parents. Alarmed, they used some of that money to book her in with a counsellor, and then a psychiatrist.

On and off throughout her teenaged years, when the visions or the flames became too obvious, Leah spent time in a very comfortable private psychiatric unit. This took her out of school, and rumours flowed there, making her returns always difficult, always traumatic, and often associated with a run of the bedroom fires. It took time to learn how to hide, but over the years, she learnt to hide it, to keep it a secret to herself, to control her temper and her outbursts in public. Finally, when college application time came around, two years later than for her peers, the time lost making up for school missed, she applied for Chicago, a city far from home. A place to try a new start where nobody knows her, and where the label of firebug, and psycho girl won't travel with her.

Unfortunately control was not Leah's friend and she ended up accidentally burning down a warehouse and nearly losing her life to the laws on preternatural abilities. Luckily she was instead sent to use her abilities, and has now returned to Chicago as a newly qualified marshal.
