Log:20081108 - Peace I hate the word

Setting

<NIGHT> Rosehill Cemetery - Ravenswood: Ravenswood Park
Sprawling over a few hundred acres is the Rosehill Cemetery, previously named
"Roe's Hill" after a local barkeep named Hiram Rose until a map-maker with
poor handwriting and/or eyesight mis-spelled the name. Here since 1859, the
southern end by the front gate is the older plot, while the northern end is
more recent and is almost exclusively flat ground-level place markers.
A few large monuments rise here and there among the trees, as well as the
occasional small chapel or mausoleum. Some of the more notable ones are the
Egyptian Temple of Darius Miller that cites the buildings of Abydos complete
to the massive scarab above the door, a small Gothic Cathedral rendered in
miniature, the Vehon site with a large semi-circle stone bench and a lithe
Art Deco maiden standing within a central pool, and the Fisher site which is
entirely underground save for the markers - the entrance stairs sealed with
cement, stone and dirt to keep folks out (or to keep the Fisher family
within). Off in one section is the much larger Rosehill Mausoleum, containing
many families and famous individuals.
A chilly wind blows from the northwest, driving dark clouds before it and
blotting out the stars in patches overhead. The air is clear and elsewhere
they glitter brightly in the dark sapphire sky.

Scene

A chilly wind blows from the northwest, driving dark clouds before it and
blotting out the stars in patches overhead. The air is clear and elsewhere
they glitter brightly in the dark sapphire sky. The average temperature is
around Thirty-eight degrees Fahrenheit, Three Centigrade.

Rosehill Cemetery. It's quiet, it's late. Nothing to be worried about. Really.
Samantha has a shotgun in her hand as she walks slowly along the rose of
markers. Looking over each one of them.

It looks like the redhead with the shotgun has been given patrol duty tonight.
It's cold, a chilly wind blowing in a fog. It's around thirty-eight degrees,
and Samantha's got a thick heavy coat on. Her gaze flickering around. Her
shotgun has a flashlight on it, and it's being shined around the graves.

All is quiet. Really.

Shane has tagged along with Sam for the night. He has his own, well used, well
oiled, well taken care of pump action shotgun with him. He's dressed in an
equally well worn sheepskin jacket, jeans, and boots. he's quiet, but alert,
very aware of his surroundings.

Rosehill Cemetery is one of those places one doesn't want to be in late at
night. Especially when they're all alone. Granted, it's probably just
paranoia from all those horror films that people are accustomed to. But then
there are strange people who tend to hang around in cemeteries, sometimes to
drink, while other times to do stuff that's less than legal. But whatever the
reason is, you always want to keep your eyes open here late at night.

Rob is walking along on the path not far from where Samantha and Shane are,
although he seems to be going his own way, not noticing them at this time.
What he's doing here, though, is anyone's guess. It is worth noting that he
is a Private Investigator, so maybe he's doing some kind of investigation
here. Or maybe he's just passing through to get to the transit station?

Samantha mutters to Shane, "I wish you wouldn't bring that thing along,
Cowboy." The redhead eyes at the other person with the shotgun and aims it
toward him. Her voice is cool and filled with authority as she says, "Chicago
Police Department, identify yourself and drop your weapon."

For a moment, Louis simply stares, although soon enough he does lower the
weapon down toward his side— he'll drop it, if absoluely pressed on the
matter. "My name is Louis," he says calmly, "I thought you could use some
help." His eyes peer toward the woman, with a faint tilt of his head.

Samantha's gaze narrows and the flashlight is aimed at Louis' face, to
disorient him. The redhead says, "Help. The best way to help, Mister Louis,
is to stay in your home and not get in the way of the police department." Her
green eyes narrow more and she says, "I'm going to have to fine you five
hundred dollars. It is illegal to carry a shotgun in Chicago. Unless you're
on the police department or working with them."

You paged (Shane, Rob) with 'Creeping along from behind the Mausolem, are two
to three maybe four figures. One of them has a hand sliding against the wall.'

Shane grins at Sam, and was about to respond to her comment to him when she
points her gun up at someone coming through the dark. He turns to face the
newcomer, but keeps his gun pointed at the ground. It's second nature to him,
keep it pointed down until bringing it to bear on someone, or something. With
him, it's always been something, never someone. He listens quietly, but then
turns his head away, a small frown on his face as he tilts his head a bit,
"Shhh! Did you hear something?" He's not sure if he did, or not, really, but
something caught his attention out of the corner of his eye, he knows that
much. And, for someone used to hunting critters on the ranch, he's probably
right. "Over there, by that building." He points toward the mausoleum.

Rob isn't entirely distracted by the sound of Samantha talking, since it's not
something that's entirely out of the ordinary in a spot like this, even late
at night. He figures it's probably some homeless people chatting, or maybe
some people having a drink, or who knows? So at first, he decides to keep
going on his way, but then his senses tell him to stop again. He's not sure
what it is, but when he turns to take another look again, he thinks he
catches a glimpse of something moving. Something that should not be there.

It looks like a few figures, but they don't look entirely human. In fact, the
way they're moving, they look more like they belong buried underground or
something. Feeling his mouth start to dry up a little, Rob reaches for his
gun but doesn't draw it yet.

It's the others reacting to the noises that distracts Louis' attention, from
his hand already moving to cover his eyes (the one without the gun, of
course.), although it's soon pointing off in the direction of the other's
talking. "If still you want to fine me after this, I'll gladly pay it," he
says, his own accent not quite American… maybe he's French-Canadian?

Samantha's shotgun is aimed away from Louis, when she hears Shane's comment.
Her gun is aimed, and the beam of the light falls on the hunched over, and
decaying people slowly making their way forward. A shot rings out and one of
the shoulders of the ghouls is all but blown off.

The ghouls scatter. There are at least four of them- visible -and they start
running for the group.

Shane turns a bit more toward the mausoleum, bringing the gun up a bit more,
but not fully. Not yet. But, that's the beauty of shotguns, point in the
basic general direction of the target, and it's gonna get hit at least
partially, right? He listens to the others, and for instructions/orders from
Sam, but he searches the darkness in the area he caught the motion from, eyes
narrowed slightly. He swears under his breath, and then louder, "Fuck!" as
the ghouls scatteras Sam shoots one of them. He glances at her before
bringing his gun up for real this time, pumping one into the chamber,
tracking one of them in the darkness before pulling the trigger and pumping
another round to the ready.

The sound of gunfire is more than enough to confirm Rob's suspicions. He pulls
back a little, this time drawing his hand gun from his holster and aiming it
at the nearest ghoul. The shot from Samantha does seem to faze the ghouls
more than a hand gun probably would, but every shot counts. As he finds
himself against a nearby tree, he steadies his aim and fires.

Shane nods to Sam, and breaks off a bit from the group. He's got five more
shots in the gun, and a whole carton of shells in his pockets. He's only got
old fashioned lead shot, but it can do a good bit of damage if his aim is
true. He catches sight of one taking off to his right, and swings around and
brings the gun up to his shoulder, taking quick aim before blasting a round
toward it's head.

Dropping his shotgun to the ground with a thud, at least after flipping the

snarl- the sort of snarl that flashes a bit of sharp, pointy fang. "Useful,"
he reiterates, "right." With a leap, the vampire flies into motion,
propelling himself at the nearest wounded ghoul-thing. He lets loose with a
war-cry before sending his fist at the thing. This wasn't going to be sanity.

"Don't get yourself shot!" Samantha shouts at the man who is now fighting with
the ghoul by hand. She turns her shotgun onto the one that Shane shot. It's
currently running toward her. It's left leg is blown off and it drops to the
ground. But continues to crawl forward.

The one that Louis is fighting with snarls and swipes at him. It leans forward
and takes a glancing bite off of Louis' shoulder.

The other two ghouls are advancing (faster) on Samantha and Shane.

Shane blinks a couple of times as the one man drops his gun and /attacks/ one
of the ghouls, barehanded. Ummmm, huh? He falters a moment, not even being
close to having expected to see something like that. He quickly gets a grip,
though, and turns back toward the ghouls, and sees they are getting closer,
and he takes aim at another one before firing again. They are getting closer,
and easier to target, for sure.

Rob finds his shot hits the mark, but then realizes that Shane and Samantha are
going to be surrounded, and relenting quickly, he moves to get closer to them
so he can help them take on the incoming ghouls. He's putting himself in the
line of fire, but it's better than leaving them to fend for themselves. He
holds off on firing for now, though.

Louis' ghoul attempts to flee. Turning around and trying to run off.

The others however are still coming. But Rob has gotten in the way so they are

"What are you doing? Are you crazy!" Samantha shouts at the guy that steps
between her and the ghouls. She steps to the side so she can aim at the ghoul
on the ground and fire another round into him. A snarl is given as she says,
"Bitey guy, help this moron!"

Shane curses, loudly, as he sees the ghouls heading changing direction, and
heading for the other man. He can't shoot toward them, for fear of hitting
that guy. So, he does the next best thing, in his opinion. He takes ahold of
his shotgun like it was a bat, and rushing forward, he does his dead level
best to imitate hitting a home run, with one of the ghouls' heads for a ball.

Rob pushes the ghoul away, but not before it manages to get a small bite out
of Rob's arm. He grits his teeth, only to find that becoming trivial as
another ghoul grabs at his ankle, and before Rob can even react, sinks its
teeth into Rob's ankle. It takes a bigger bite of Rob's ankle than the arm.

things could've been worse. As it is, he figures that maybe there's a
security guard's shack nearby or something where he can get some first aid
supplies, then get the hell outta here.

Without his gun handy, Louis instead takes a moment to brush off and make a
cursory attempt at cleaning some of the spots from his coat. "We're safe for
now, but what sort of thing is stirring the dead?" he questions, as his steps
carry him in the direction of his old shotgun. It's dirty, having been

Samantha lifts her shotgun with it's flashlight and aims it toward the fleeing

It goes down. She aims the shotgun at the ground with one hand, and then
pulls out her cellphone dialing a number. She says into, "I need a clean up
crew, Rosehill."

She then turns to the others and says, "The rest of you get out of here." A
glower at Shane, "That means you too."

Shane looks around quickly, taking stock of the area and any remaining threats,
sighing softly as he sees no immediate threat. He looks at Sam for a long
moment when she orders him away, but he doesn't say anything, just nods,
shouldering his shotgun. "Either of you guys need a ride anywhere? My truck's
not far. It'll get us where we need to be, that's not here." He grins at Sam,
"See you at the house later?"

"Don't need to tell me that," Rob says as he holsters his gun and then heads
off, albeit with a slight limp, towards the entrance to the cemetery, where
he believes there's a small 'shack' where a security guard is always
stationed. And most security stations have a first-aid kit. He figures once
he's patched up the minor, but annoying, wound, he'll head home for some much
needed rest.

After giving his gun a quick clean with a white handkerchief, Louis lets his
gun hang at his side. "Thank you," he says back to the other man, "But my car
is not far away." Giving a half-salute with a flick of his hand, he adds a
quieter, "It was nice to meet all of you," before he turns and disappears off
into the cover of night.
