Log:20100405 - Shattered - Part Two

Setting

Grant Park - Michigan Street: South

A sea of green amidst the urban sprawl of the Windy City, Grant Park offers the area a bit of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of city life. A broad expanse of green lies on either side of a cobblestone walkway that leads to Buckingham Fountain. The fountain itself is a landmark in its own right, a colossal sculpture of steel and bronze that shoots water high into the air during the summer but lies dormant in winter.

The Art Institute of Chicago lies in one corner of the park while the amphitheatre is in the other. Picnic tables dot the length of the area for families to gather in order to enjoy the atmosphere and the view of the lake that the park offers.

IC Date

It's Monday, April fifth 2010. 05:56 pm

The sun is down. The waning gibbous moon isn't up. <83.3% full and fading>

The tide is low and rising.

A cool breeze blows from the north, driving dark clouds before it which blot out the stars in patches overhead. Elsewhere they glitter brightly in the dark sapphire sky. The average temperature is around Forty-eight degrees Fahrenheit, Eight Centigrade.

Scene

It's a beautiful evening in Grant Park. Well, compared to the freezing temperatures and sleet of a few weeks back, anything is beautiful. There's no ice, so that makes the day a check in the win column. The grass is even trying to make a comeback after the torments of the rough winter. The surest sign of Spring being sprung though, is that today is the day they turn the water back on in Buckingham Fountain in the park.

A large handful of citizens have gathered around just after dusk to see the first light and water show of the season. There are excited whispers among them about the return of the landmark to its full glory after being dormant since mid-October of last year. Families with small children, more than a few couples doing something romantic, and several elderly residents all stand around the perimeter of the nearly 300 foot diameter structure.

Among them is one Meg, standing out by virtue of /eveningwear/ (if you must wear a dress, it may as well be as flattering as possible, mm?) and a black and battered violin case set at her feet. She wears a faintly guilty expression, glancing now and again at a slim watch on her wrist, but the fountain event has drawn her. Whatever she may be late for, it can wait. Anticipation is better when it's guilty anyway.

Wes is walking through the park, enjoying the evening, and apparently doing his damned best to prevent the rest of the citizens from enjoying the evening air. He smokes a particularly bitter cigarette as he heads through the park, and then says to Michael, who's come with him, "So how've you been, mate, 's been a while."

Bert had dropped off a couple of tourist that wanted to see the park and she had pointed out to them the Art Institute as a place they might want to check out. And seeing that she needed a break herself, she puts up the off duty sign on the cab, takes her cap off and goes strolling.

Monty isn't here to see the water being turned, he was here jogging. Sweat pants and a hoodie covering a muscle shirt don't mesh in all that well with some of the people that actually came to see the show but since he's passing by and people seem excited, he pauses to watch, too. A woman in a dress catches his attention and recognition, but if he moves closer to her, it's probably just coincidence.

A little boy walking by holding the hand of his mother looks up at Meg with wide eyes. "Aren't you COLD?" he asks. Out of the mouths of babes. His mother looks like she's caught between apologetic for it and eyeing the woman up and down like she might be crazy for her attire.

Standing out in a crowd seems to be the specialty of the Marshal, Roderick, who is standing a decent distance from the fountain, while still trying to keep a good line of sight. His black clothes, or maybe it is his guns, make him stick out like a sore thumb. His hands are casually in his pockets, as his eyes scan the crowd slowly, almost as if looking for something, or someone. It isn't immediately clear if he is there to watch the show, or to make sure no one causes any trouble.

"Pretty good, actually." Michael notes with a bit of his own guilty wince. ".. You haven't talked to Lexine lately, have you?" He wonders. If Wes' smoke bothers him, he doesn't show it, or - at least he tries his best. Practice? As the pair make their way towards the fountain to watch? Michael looks around a touch. "I didn't think so many people would have showed."

Megan flashes the kid a toothy grin. "Y' got /no idea/. I forgot m' coat." And she does seem to be showing the chill, but seems reluctant to /go anywhere/. "S'okay, though - " And she winks at the little one - looking up to call across at Roderick. "Oi! You! C'mere." And.. yup! She crooks a finger at him, from her spot on the crowd's fringe.

A little old lady walks by Roderick, takes one look at his guns, and declares "Heavens to Betsy, boy! Are you thinking there are bears in the park!?" She swings at his ankle with her cane and harrumphs before walking on closer to the fountain.

Roderick arches a brow at the woman and, in his thick British accent, "Pardon me, miss, but you can't even imagine." He lifts his foot, avoiding a cane to the ankle, just barely. He turns as he hears Megan calling out to him. He inclines his head slightly, pulls out a black pack from his pocket, and a lighter. He lights a clove and replaces everything in his pocket before heading her direction.

The little boy blurts out, "You can have mine!" to Meg, and for a moment he tries to get his coat off before his mother hisses at him and drags him away. "Never talk to improperly dressed strangers! How many times do I have to tell you not to…" the lecture fades in volume as they walk away.

"No, 've been working a lot," Wes says to Michael, and then looks over the crowd. He picks out individual faces, past the little old lady walking by Roderick. "'s a bit like every odd ball in town's here, innit." He recognizes Roderick, "N' even a few I thought had left town. Something wrong with Lexine?" he asks Michael.

When Meg's blurting out to someone else, Monty's attention moves more toward the fountain and he stops moving altogether. His hands go into his pockets and his head rolls over his shoulders restlessly. He can watch from here. Here is a good spot.

Bert watches, watches and thinks about what she sees. She walks a bit more then pauses to look around then up at the fountain. "man, I wish dad was here to see this." she stands there a couple of minutes before moving on with her eyes settling on the others nearby. Her gaze sides over Meg then suddenly returns to her and grins when the little boy tries to give the woman is coat.

"You might want to give her a call. You know, same old trouble." Michael notes, own eyes scanning the crowd. "Just take anything she says with a grain of salt. She may or may not be a bit upset for the next month." He notes. "Which may or may not be my fault."

The little old lady grunts at Wes as he and Michael pass, "Smokers! In this day and age!"

"Are y' a gentleman?" This gets asked, whimsically, to Rod - Meg idly rubbing at her own arms with gloved hands. "Y' can call me a damsel 'n distress, if y' like - give m' yer jacket." The smile she offers remains sunny.

Happy oohs and ahhs and a smattering of applause erupts from the crowd as the lights come on and the water begins to flow. The trademark plume shoots 150 feet in the air and cheers rise from the sea of scattered spectators. The lights in the water and in the structures change colors in a magnificent display. But it seems not all the cheers are cheerful. There are screams from one side of the fountain, accompanied by shrieks of "MONSTERS!"

Wes grins at the old lady as he passes, and says, "Lucky you, we're rare now n' days, innit." He returns to talking to Michael, and says, "Why your fault - " he stops talking at the sound of the shrieks, and then says, "'monsters', apparently," Wes says, and indicates the direction of the screams by looking in that direction and a thumb. Being Wes, he tries to get a better look, heading in the direction of the screams.

Roderick arches a brow as he approaches Megan, seemingly not even cold at all. He drags from his clove and the smoke makes a white trail in the air, "I would, dear, if I was actually wearing a coat, myself." He grins at her and then his attention is turned to the huge plume of water.

"Wow! You know? This place never gets old.." Michael notes, his attention on the plume of water. He's about to respond to Wes' half sentence in confusion, when the other man starts walking off. "What? Where?"

"What kind o' hero are you, if y' cannot get a woman a …" Meg breaks off. "… here." And suddenly Roderick has a black violin case shoved at him, "Hold that." And with a sudden intrigued tilt to her head, she starts in the same direction Wes is going, if from a different angle.

Bert doesn't run, yet, but she goes on tip toe to look toward where the screams are coming from trying to see if it's real or someone ranting about a shifter.

Roderick arches a brow at Meg as she shoves the violin case at him. He carefully sets in on the ground, though, his eyes following her as she starts off. He takes another hit from the clove, "That was…odd." he says, to no one in particular.

Screams are quick to draw Monty's attention away from the fountain and his restless motions start anew as he moves to head in the direction of the screams. Better than heading away from them, probably. Maybe. Hopefully. He's careful to weave through people rather than knocking them over.

Within moments there is chaos, with people running willy nilly from the east side of the monument, arms flailing, children crying, and as the crowds scatter and part, those remaining can see one frumpy middle-aged woman in a desperate tug of war for her oversized canvas bag.

On the other end of said bag? Are three small, leathery skinned creatures whose scales are a rather ugly burnt orange. They have wide mouths full of sharp white teeth, talon tipped claws on hands and feet, stunted short tails, ribbed abdomens in a yellowish shade, and ears that resemble those of a bat. They stand about a foot and a half high, with ugly heads too big for their bodies, and built graduated from broad in the shoulders to spindly in the legs. They look like discolored Gremlin knock offs. One of them has bleached out-looking white spots on his back, one has a beard of spikes around his lower jaw, and the last has only shreds of leathery skin where his ears used to be.

They are not alone. Leaping up onto the edge of the fountain are three more of the creatures. One has a hunch back which makes him lurch awkwardly, but no less quickly, than his brethren. Another has a downturn to the edges of his mouth that makes him look perpetually grumpy whereas the rest look to be smiling maniacally. The final one has patches of moldy looking green on his yellow ribbed belly.

Bert starts trotting toward the middle aged woman and as she nears her, she yell. "let the bag go woman, let it go." and as she moves in to touching range she launches what some call a drop kick, only she didn't drop the critter, just kicked at him.

It doesn't take long for Michael to begin making his way after Wes, and when he finally nears the crowd? He's taken aback a moment by the sight of.. little monsters. After scanning the scene for a moment, he sees the three.. things harassing the old woman, and jogs towards her, kicking at one of the gremlins(?). His boot catches an ugly bearded thing, which squeaks in protest, but remains tugging.

Monty hangs back somewhat to keep himself between the nasty, ugly things and all the squishy humans. He ends up close to the fountain and maybe it's a dog, cat or, er, gremlin thing, but he can't just stand there so he approaches and smacks one of the things upside the head. "Go on! Get out of here!"

Wes sprints towards the fountain, "Mike!" he says as he runs, "Either stay within sight o' me or phone Lex n' head out." He grabs one of the gremlins off the fountain, and runs away from the group. It looks like he's trying to isolate it from its, er, gremlin friends.

Roderick immediately springs into action, running towards the one unengaged gremlin. As he sprints across the walkway, he draws a rather large gun from each of the two holsters in his shoulder rig, "Get down!" he yells out, "U.S. Marshal!" He bears down on the gremlin and squeezes off a shot from each gun. The first shot whizzes by the gremlin, but the second shot seems to connect, but he looks far from going down.

Meg doesn't exactly /spring/. Nor does she run up and slap anything - in fact, she starts to run, ends up tottering on high heels (which are promptly shed) and ends up among the last to get in among these beasties, and just.. well. She puts hands on her hips, looking oddly curious, and yells - "Y' lot are a /sorry/ bunch of ugly things - " And she stalks in the direction of the purse and the struggle. "Annoyin', brutish, little /bastards/ - messin' up a perfectly good /show/."

The woman takes Bert's advice to heart and she lets go of the straps of her bag and runs towards the trees. She does so just as Spots yanks hard on the canvas bag and he tumbles ass over elbows on the ground. The creature gets back to his feet and upends the bag, dumping out its contents all over the paving stones that surround the fountain. Makeup, reading glasses, handkerchief, palm pilot, pen, car keys, a little spray bottle of mace, and a personal item that runs on batteries and is otherwise best left undescribed all clatter to the ground.

Beard gets intimate with the treads of Michael's boot and Shreds gets a face full of Bert foot, but they shake it off and pick up items from the woman's purse and begin hurling them at the pair. Bert gets a compact and a glasses case hurled at her head but Shreds' aim is about as solid as his ears. Michael finds the PDA and mace aimed at him. The palm pilot soars to shatter on the ground but the can of mace WHAPS him in the ear. Hunch lets out a squeaky yowl as Wes grabs him and takes off. He flails wildly and scratches at the man with his taloned claws but he's being dangled just out of reach and can't connect.

Patches gets pounded by Monty and he yelps, but a look from Spots makes him and Grumpy screw up their faces, then leap off the edge of the fountain into the water with a lot of splashing. Patches does a lovely swan dive. Grumpy gets shot in mid air and winds up belly flopping even though he's still alive. The two creatures dive down, and come up with mouthfuls of the loose change visitors toss in to make wishes. They frantically dog paddle back towards the fountain's edge with their stolen booty as Spots waggles his non-existent naughty bits at Meg.

The PDA skids off the ground, but the Mace? Michael tries to duck to avoid it. This, of course saves his face - at the sacrifice of his ear. "Oww! Damn it! Shoo!" Wes' words draw his attention, and Michael nods. Another kick at the bearded err.. gremlin, and Michael begins to turn heel, and follow Wes. "I'm coming!"

Stupid ugly monster things. Monty growls when the gremlins dive into the water and he waits along the edge for them to come paddling back, moving so he's there to meet them. When they do, he reaches to grab Patches' head and pushes him under the water. That gurgling sound is just a little bit satisfying.

GAME> Wes rolls 68 against 30% <+20%> : 18% failure (Wes looks around for something to tie Hunch up with)

Wes is engaged in pinning the gremlin, holding it limbs behind its hunched back. He looks over at Michael, and says, "'s an ugly bastard, but it looks like they're mostly after the coins, innit." He indicates the fountain. "Probably the reason why they were grabbing a woman's purse to begin with. Sharp teeth though, watch out."

Roderick shakes his head and braces, bringing his guns to bear on Grumpy again, who is now in the water. He aims carefully, to keep from winging anyone, or worse, the fires, a explosive sound erupting from each gun, as both bullets find their target, in the water.

Megan reaches down, not /looking/ to snag the thing that's bumped into her now-bare foot, as she harrumphs at Spots. She fumbles with it a bit - leveling it at the gremliny flasher - "M' comin' /over/ there - an' m' goin' to - " The object in her hand is.. vibrating. And bluntly pointy. It leads to an obvious statement of intent. "An' discover if y' got somethin' I can shove this in." And so Meg waves the poor woman's Personal Object at Spots, stalking at the snickering /thing/ with a glower.

GAME> Eleanor rolls 92 against 50% <+42% -50%> : 50% failure (Patches attacks Monty - Unarmed)

Spots leaps up onto the edge of the fountain and holds the bag out wide open for Patches and Grumpy to spit the coins into. Those big mouths probably hold a lot. Grumpy swims towards the edge of the fountain and gets shot twice for his efforts before he vomits up his pennies and nickels into Spots' bag. Poor Patches doesn't even make it that far as he gurgles and sucks down some water as Monty holds his head down. He claws frantically at the man's arms without connecting.

Spots whaps Grumpy on the head and chitters angrily at him, then points at Meg and her weapon of (m)ass destruction. With a grunt and a jerked thumb-claw at the bullet holes in him, Grumpy mutters and dashes off into the fray, charging at Meg while flipping Spots the gremlin bird. He opens his maw to try and chomp on her calf and sinks those sharp little teeth in but good.

Beard and Shreds are out of things to throw. Beard leaps at Michael, and slashes claws across his knees with a maniacal hyena-like laugh. Shreds tries to follow suit and lunges at Bert, but he misses her entirely and trips over his own two feet. Er claws. Er…you know what I mean.

"Oww!" Michael yelps, as the bearded gremlin catches him behind the knees - which nearly sends him stumbling. "Wes! Wait up!" He calls out, before turning on his heels. "Back /off/!" Michael growls before bringing his hand down in a clenched fist at the top of the gremlin's head. The bearded gremlin - which actually seems to make the beast stumble a touch.

Monty stays with his new friend to continue supervising this lovely fountain experience. "Stop clawing at me," he growls and pulls Patches forward to bash his head against the inner wall of the fountain a time or three. "Just relax, man," he adds, glancing over his shoulder to take in what's going on with the other things.

GAME> Wes rolls 20 against 20% <+35%> : 35% success (Wes tries make eye contact with Beard)

Wes catches up to Michael, turning around with pinned gremlin in hands, and turns to face Beard the gremlin - the one that had slashed Michael, with a long, hard stare. With no effect whatsoever. Wes looks surprised, and says to Michael, now on par with him, "Are you all right?"

Roderick frowns and shakes his head as Grumpy latches on to Megan's leg. He turns and brings both guns to bear on the gremlin again, taking careful aim to avoid hitting Meg, as he does. The explosions rock around him again, as both guns go off, but apparently he was aiming too carefully and both bullets miss the gremlin, tearing up pieces of the concrete as they miss.

Meg yelps - but.. well. To say her expression is beatifically gleeful would not be understating it, in the slightest. She tears the little thing loose from her leg - and moves, with an oddly blurred rapidity, smashing it once, twice, three times into the pavement. She finds the time, however, to yell at Roderick - "STOP shootin' at ME." And she adds, brightly, "Damnit." Grumpy there looks /unhappy/ - bedraggled and staggery - but he's still moving when Meg lets him go.

Spots decides running away like a chicken is the better part of valor. He ties the handles of the bag into a knot before slipping the handles over his shoulders like a backpack and taking off on all fours for the trees between the fountain and the skyscrapers beyond. If they were planning a major heist, the bounty of pennies and nickels is probably going to fall short.

Beard gets sledge-hammered on top of his head by Michael's fists and he looks a little dizzy for a moment before he suddenly has Wes in his face. He blinks at the man a few times then he falls over on the ground, bleeding ichor out of every orifice. Shreds' tail absorbs most of the damage from Bert's kick, but he dances around for a few seconds, holding it with both hands and squealing in pain before he leaps up to try and bite her in her rear out of revenge. Chomp! Hunch squeals and kicks and screams in Wes' hands while he's focused on Beard. He clamps his eyes shut tight.

Grumpy gets beaten like a burnt-orange hairless stepchild by Meg, and he reels for a moment before snapping his jaws onto the wrist of the fist that was pummeling him. Grrr. Argh!

And poor, poor Patches obviously did not get the gremlin's share of the brains in the batch. He tries to claw Monty's arms up but is too weak to even connect with skin. He puts lots of holes in his sweaty old hoodie though.

Bert yips when the thing bites her and with the swiftness of her kind she reaches down and grabs the critter by the head, picks it up and begins to swing it, the body spinning around like a top while she hands on to it's head. "damn you." is growled as she just slams it down on the ground where it lays almost dead.

"I'm.. alright." Michael notes, looking a little confused as the creature starts leaking ichor from its orifices. "I think I got it though. What the hell is going on?!" He questions, making his way to his feet once more - offering the 'body' a swift kick. "Bastard."

Monty bashes the poor gremlin's head into the inner wall of the fountain a few more times. It's hard to say what exactly kills it but after Monty notices that it's not struggling anymore, he pulls Patches out of the water and drops the limp body on the ground beside the fountain.

GAME> Wes rolls 62 against 50% <+21%> : 9% success (Wes looks for anything unusual in the park)

Finally, Rod just gives up on shooting the damn thing and expertly flips his Eagles, catching them by the barrels, one after the other, closing the gap and slamming the grips into the face and body of Grumpy the Gremlin. As he strikes the monster, black ichor flies in a spatter pattern off the bottom of the gun grips, the gremlin looking very close to dead, by this point.

Meg screeches like… well. A banshee. And, snarling, she snatches the little thing off of her arm, grabbing it by both ears.. and. Er. Well. She headbutts it. Twice. The slamming it into the pavement and grinding its face into a sort of ichory paste? That's /probably/ overkill. Of course, she looks up to Rob - smiling toothily. "… so. Was 't good f' you?" She enjoyed it. The smile says it all.

Patches is now an ex-gremlin. His head is no longer quite as big as it used to be. It's kind of flat and concave on one side where it kept meeting the wall of the fountain.

Grumpy gets pistol whipped and he tries to hold his clawed hands up over his head to ward off the blows, to no avail as Meg then smooshes him to death.

Shreds falls to the ground after Bert dances the Macarena on him, and he looks like he's done for as he's bleeding that black goop from all his cracks and crevices. He tries to crawl away feebly at a snail's pace. Karma decides to add insult to injury as the little old lady who bitched at Rod and Wes earlier WHACKS him in the eyeball with her cane. He expires as she snorts down at him. "Damn gremlins. Not the brightest bulbs in the house." She totters on her way.

Hunch is quivering in Wes' grip like he's going to explode. And then he does. Sort of. He melts in Wes' hands like a snowman in Hades. Only black and goopy and kind of grossly warm. Ok, not kind of, definitely. Gross. Ick. Ew. Nasty. Creepier still, the corpses follow suit after, turning into puddles of tar-like, stinky goo.

"Maybe we should take it back to the house? Put it in a cage or some-" The body Wes holds begins to melt, and Michael? Takes a quick step back. "That's.. sick." He notes, nose wrinkling. "What the hell /are/ those things?"

Bert backs away from the woman with the cane, can't be too careful with older women that carry canes. "what the crap are they." then the one at her feet melts and she backs away to keep the stuff from getting on her shoes.

Roderick stands up, shaking his head, as he wipes the ichor off his guns onto his cargo pants, "Great. My clothes will have to go to the cleaners or be replaced now." He looks at Meg, grinning, "Oh, it was very good for me, personally. You seemed to enjoy it yourself." He shakes his head, replacing the guns in their respective holsters, before pulling out a new clove, lighting it and taking a deep drag. "I suppose that is my excitement for the week."

Wes shakes off his hands, "No bloody clue. Magical pondscum?" Wes' suggestion is. "Sort o' reminds me of a head made out of this shite." He looks around for something to wipe off the goo, and then settles on going over to the fountain to try to wash it off. "Was hoping to take it back to study, or sommat."

With his little gremlin not moving, Monty looks a little out of sorts about what to do now. He wipes his hand on the side of his pants, then looks up and around. Since things are well enough in hand, he moves to make himself scarce and continue with his jog somewhere else.

Meg straightens, oddly mincing back from that black pool of goo - bleeding dark blood from wrist and calf herself. Her nose wrinkles - "Eww. Jus' - eww. Who makes stuff out o' crude oil an' viciousness? S' jus' /nasty/, s' what 't is." And she pauses - suddenly eying Rod. "What did y' do with m' /case/?"

"Well, a good squeegee and you still could, I guess. Maybe someone might know what it is? Gremlins or something?" He questions, following Wes towards the fountain. "That damned thing ruined my favorite pair of pants." He notes.

Roderick arches a brow at Meg, "Your case? Oh that." he smiles slightly, "I set it down nicely back there…." He jerks a thumb back towards where they were standing, "….so that I could come deal with this issue."

Bert is ok, except for the hole in her pants. something which she is looking at now. 'another good pair of pants gone."

"Hmm," Wes says, and takes a handkerchief from inside his coat and wipes some off the fountain, the one that had been previously smashed against the surface off it. He folds up the handkerchief, and tucks it away into his coat. "I'll see if I can find anyone to ask about it." He adds about the pants, as he starts to head out of the park. "No way to half-stitch them up n' pretend that they were bought that way?"

The sounds of sirens can be heard in the distance as the cops have definitely gotten word of the weird repeat attack. From somewhere behind Meg comes a tug on her dress. The little boy hands her over his coat with wide eyes. "You are AWESOME!!!!!" he declares, vibrating with almost as much excitement as the exploding Gremlin. He doesn't turn to go though, he just runs back to his mommy.
