The shabby stone church has certainly seen better days. The dusty air hangs heavy and still, a musty smell of decay pervading the senses. Overhead, vaulted ceiling rises up into the gloom, and underfoot many of the floor tiles are cracked or missing. Two rows of battered ancient wooden pews lead forward to the altar, the tarnished silverware lit by a single overhead bulb. A heavy wooden crucifix looms ominously above the altar, the plaster Jesus frozen in an agonized position with chipped, peeling eyes rolled upwards towards heaven as the faded blood runs down His face like a veil. The altar cloth, on close inspection, is clean but threadbare, the fringe of golden thread around the edges long since stolen, and the confessional booth is tipped slightly to one side like a drunk slumped in the corner. Everything inside the church is shabby and faded, reminiscent of past glories; maybe in its prime it could seat a congregation of a thousand, but now just a few dozen people attend Mass on Sundays.
